July 29, 2010, 5:58 pm

Don't let the bed bugs bite! It's not just a silly bedtime saying anymore. Studies show a dramatic increase in bed bug infestation across the U.S.  CLICK FOR VIDEO  Here, locally, things are no different. Erie Pest Control says the number of cases they have seen has doubled in the past year.

"Huge, huge number. Just in the last two weeks, I've done five jobs and I have one tomorrow. Years ago, I might have done one a month, so a huge increase." says Kevin Hultberg, a Pest Control Technician with Erie Pest Control.

Erie Pest Control also says it's not just the number of local cases that has increased, but the number of places is on the rise too.

Hultberg says, "Hotels and apartments, now they don't discriminate, they are in houses, anywhere where people sleep."

Recent reports indicate that the increase in bed bugs is due to increased international travel. These insects can easily come home with you after you travel. The good news is that there are ways to avoid them.

You want to be sure to inspect your hotel room beforehand, especially around the bed and headboard. Bed bugs are large enough that you can see them. Other things to watch out for is used furniture and clothing. Inspect your luggage after traveling and wash new clothes before wearing them.
